Founded as the Philosophy Department of the Institut Saint-Louis, and became independent in 1929. Until 2012 it carried the name Faculté universitaires Saint-Louis. In 2017, it was announced that Saint-Louis University will merge with Catholic University of Louvain into new institution UCLouvain.
